Family Catechesis Sacrament Guidelines 2026/2027

Updated 2/14/2026

Preparation for the Sacraments at St. Peter St. Joan of Arc Parish asks our parents to
walk hand in hand with their children as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of
Initiation. Parents are the primary educators in their children’s faith. The Catechism
states, “Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child’s earliest years…
Family catechesis precedes, accompanies and enriches other forms of instruction in the
faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their
vocation as children of God.” (#2226)
We encourage our families to enroll their child in Family Catechesis consistently,
age 3 through 8th grade. Here are the guidelines for youth and teens wishing to
receive the Sacraments of Baptism (if not done prior to the age of 7), First
Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION FOR

A CHILD BAPTIZED PRIOR TO AGE OF 7

A child must participate in 2 consecutive years of the St. Peter St. Joan of Arc Journey
with Christ program before receiving the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First
Communion.
If a child has completed their first year of preparation at another Catholic School or
Parish Religious Education Program, that will count towards their two years of
preparation. A letter of verification of completion of the first year from that church will be
required.
If a child begins their religious formation in 2nd grade through 6th grade, the two years
of participation in the Journey with Christ program will still apply. The child, with the
parent’s support, may be asked to do additional assignments (and/ or attend retreats)
appropriate to their present age in their second year of participation.
First Reconciliation and First Communion will be received at the appropriate time in the
child’s second year of preparation.
The child would continue their journey to Confirmation by participating each year in the
Journey with Christ program, until the time of Confirmation.

BAPTISM, FIRST RECONCILIATION,

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION

FOR A CHILD NOT BAPTIZED PRIOR TO AGE OF 7

If the child has not been baptized prior to the age of 7, they will need to participate in
two years of St. Peter St. Joan of Arc’s Journey with Christ program. In addition, during
their two years of preparation, they will attend a Sacrament class which meets monthly
(September-April). The child, with parent’s support, may be asked to do additional
assignments (and/or attend retreats) appropriate to their present age in their second
year of participation.
If a child has completed their first year of preparation at another Catholic School or
Parish Religious Education Program, that will count towards their two years of
preparation. A letter of verification of completion of the first year from that church will be
required.
Upon completion of their second year of Journey with Christ and Sacrament class, the
child will receive all three Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, First Communion and
Confirmation - at the same time.
The child should continue their faith journey by participating in the Journey with Christ
program through 8th grade. If a child is older than 8th grade when the sacraments are
received, they are encouraged to participate in our High School Youth Ministry.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

YOUTH WHO HAVE RECEIVED

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION

It has been decided in our Diocese to lower the Confirmation age to children in 4th
grade. You can read more about why this decision was made by visiting the following
St. Peter St. Joan of Arc will implement a stair-step approach over the next few years to
achieve this goal. Confirmation Liturgies will still happen in the spring. Please refer to
the timeline below:
2027 - 7th and 8th Graders
2028 - 6th and 7th Graders
2029 - 5th and 6th Graders
2030 - 4th and 5th Graders
2031 and Beyond - 4th Graders
Your child must be in at least 7th or 8th grade for the 2026/2027 school year in order to
be confirmed in 2027. We are only requiring 1 year of preparation for the
Sacrament of Confirmation at this time.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

BAPTIZED YOUTH WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION

If a youth is in 7th or 8th grade and has not received First Reconciliation or First
Communion, they will prepare for these Sacraments along with their Confirmation
preparations.
The youth, with parent’s support, may be asked to do additional assignments (and/or
attend retreats) appropriate to their present age.
Two consecutive years of preparation will not apply to 7th and 8th graders for
2026/2027.

SACRAMENT PREPARATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEENS

If a teen is in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade, they will participate in a year-long faith
formation program in order to prepare for any Sacraments they may need to receive,
which may include Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.
