Role of the Godparent

The primary role of a Godparent is to be a witness of the Catholic faith, demonstrating how to live a Christian life. They assist in the spiritual development of the baptized person, helping them grow in their faith and understanding of Catholic teachings.

Godparents are present at the baptism ceremony, where they make a commitment to support the baptized person in their faith journey. During the ceremony, Godparents make vows to renounce sin and profess faith on behalf of the child.

The role of Godparent begins at the baptism ceremony. They should maintain a lifelong relationship with the baptized person, offering guidance, support, and encouragement in their spiritual life. Godparents are encouraged to live this out by regularly praying for the Godchild, recognizing their baptismal anniversary and milestones of their life, leading by their example of holiness, and supporting the child’s parents in their role as primary educators of the faith.
